Atelier Thamga
A block printing workshop in Bodrum: one long table, two people, and the same box of wooden shapes.
Ipek and her mother spent the morning at @atelierthamga in Konacık, with Zeynep Semiz leading and Roza working alongside her. Zeynep also shoots the atelier’s own collection. I came in partway through with a camera and stayed.
Aslı is Ipek’s mother, and she runs @catchysights on her own, a Leuven brand that turns the city into illustrated posters, prints and small objects worth keeping. She draws some of it herself and brings in local artists and makers for the rest, almost all of them women. Ipek, a business analyst with a marketing background, keeps the website sharp. That morning the table was entirely women.
The blocks stay with the atelier. What goes home is the cloth, and every decision about where a mark landed on it. Working from one tray, the two of them came home with a unique design as a result of their own creativity and inspiration. Some would call this an extremely successful workshop.
