Stratonikeia and Dibeklihan

Two places built of stone. Stratonikeia welcomes you as the city of gladiators and eternal love: a Seleucid king named it for his wife, Stratonike, built it in white marble, and a few families still live among the columns; on the council house wall stands an emperor’s price list from the year 301. And Dibeklihan in Yakaköy, the art village an architect and her husband raised from old Anatolian stone. A dibek is the stone mortar coffee is pounded in.

Stratonikeia

Rows of marble columns at Stratonikeia, one stretch still carrying its stone lintel, forested hills behind
Two columns with scrolled capitals flanking stone steps, a stone gateway behind, dry grass in front
Looking up at marble columns and their carved lintels, the sun blazing in a clear sky
A richly carved stone lintel resting on two leafy capitals against deep blue sky
The weathered top of a fluted column, its carved acanthus capital alone against blue sky
A small colonnade still bearing its stone beams, a paved path running past in the sun
Tall columns patched with bands of bright white stone, seen from below along a colonnade
A capital set on a column base, deep acanthus leaves below small carved animals
Greek letters and a small cross carved into a marble block resting on rough stones
A long colonnade with bright white repairs, rubble walls in front and wooded hills beyond
A lone fluted column with a carved capital at Stratonikeia, olive trees and blue sky behind
The two of us holding hands across a double marble doorway under a broken stone vault
Wooden chairs and small tables in dappled tree shade before an old house with wooden shutters
An abandoned house with a collapsing tiled roof, framed by a gap in a ruined wall

Dibeklihan

Rows of canvas folding chairs under striped umbrellas before the stone arches of Dibeklihan
Under a striped awning, a stone arch opening onto glowing shelves of wine bottles
A wine cabinet lit beneath a stone arch, a tartan-cushioned chair and round table in front
A glowing stone archway sheltering wooden lounge chairs and a rattan seat around a low table
Small metal figures climbing a wooden ring, a sculpture on a weathered table between gold lamps
Painted portraits of women on a stone wall above a bar and a sculpted head
The two of us in the evening, a kiss on the temple, Dibeklihan's lit terrace behind
The two of us reflected in an oval mirror with gilt flowers, camera in hand
Chocolate cake sprinkled with pistachio on a pink plate, an iced red drink beside it
Long tables and black chairs before a lamplit stone arch hung with painted portraits
Biscuits and cake under glass domes in a serving hatch, a kitchen of colourful tiles beyond
Layers of dark grey cloud with bands of orange sunset glowing between them
